The Minerva Award for Rising Star of the Year
The most prestigious awards in Canadian occupational health and safety were revealed during a virtual ceremony on Thursday, October 20th. Canada’s Safest Employers Awards (CSEAs) recognize outstanding health and safety professionals and companies for leadership, innovation, and achievements. The incredible show featured an equally remarkable host in Brodie Lawson, who Canadian sports fans know well for her coverage of the Canadian Football League. Lawson is a former host of CFL Digital and a regular TSN contributor. More than 500 attendees logged on for the 12th annual event to celebrate the winners in 20 different categories. It also included in-depth panel discussions about the current state of the health and safety industry and where it’s heading in the future.

Nominations The call for nominations were open to all occupational health and safety professionals, teams, companies and organizations - including industry service providers - from across Canada. Nominations were open from February 28, 2022 to April 22, 2022 at 11:59 pm ET.
Finalist Once all nominations were considered and research was completed, excellence awardees selected in each category and notified via e-mail or phone. Excellence awardees were officially announced on August 2022 on the Canada’s Safest Employers Awards website and promoted in the Canadian Occupational Safety magazine and online channels.
Judging All submissions from our excellence awardees were forwarded to the independent judging panel comprising esteemed experts, thought leaders and veterans in and around the occupational health and safety profession. The panel assessed and voted for their winners in each category according to the relevant category criteria. Voting commenced last August 2022 and their judgment were impartial, balanced, incisive and fair. Any judge with conflict of interest in a category will recuse themselves from judging that category.
Winners Using a simple points system to aggregate the judges’ votes, the finalist with the top score in a category was named winner. Winners were announced at the awards show on October 20, 2022 and on the Canadian Occupational Safety website.

Panel Discussions The hottest topics in workplace safety came up during seven panel chats featuring some of the brightest minds in the industry. They talked about a wide range of subjects including how to ensure environmental safety in the work place and the role of the environmental health and safety officer, which has been steadily growing over the past several years. The conversations also touched on the need for a top-down approach to safety culture that begins in the executive suites. In addition to theory about best safety practices, the participants also learned strategies to grow and succeed in their safety careers. There was also a panel featuring some of the industry’s rising stars. Andrea Hilder, Ryan Rhodes, and John Elroy Canila were asked to speak about their experiences and some of the incredible work they are doing as younger people in the industry. Sponsors Avetta was the main event partner, and it sponsored the award for Best Safety Industry Provider and shares this message. “Avetta started with a powerful vision: to make sure all workers get home from their jobs safely, every single day. As we've grown, we've not only stayed true to this vision — we've expanded it. Today, we provide the foundation for clients, suppliers, contractors, workers, and vendors to forge stronger relationships, ensuring every workplace is safe and sustainable. For this reason, we are honoured to be associated with the award for Best Safety Industry Provider.” That award went to the Alberta Construction Safety Association. Meanwhile, construction companies had their own specific category to compete in, and the Borger Group of Companies walked away with the award for Canada’s Safest Construction Employer. “This award is confirmation that we are on the right path but more importantly that safety is a source of pride for our whole team,” says the Borger Group of Companies. It says the top highlight over the past year has been integrating its in-house safety Vizzn Software. It identifies missing safety paperwork and compares active equipment and actual events to safety paperwork. It plans to utilize this software program even more in the new year saying, “the interactive drawings feature identifies gas, fiber and electrical lines and any additional hazards so all team members can identify the location, in real time, of these hazards in relation to their own location.” More Winners Other notable awards include The BGIS Award for Safety Leader of the Year which went to Lee-Anne Lyon-Bartley, executive vice president of health, safety, environment, and quality at Dexterra Group. Lyon-Bartley's colleagues created a short video describing her commitment to safety as "passionate", "unwavering", and "inspiring". In an interview with Canadian Occupational Safety Lyon-Bartley says the award is an affirmation of her hard work. “Representation matters. And so, I also think that maybe, you know, I put in the work, and we also see that example, that, you know, it's possible.” Drone Delivery Canada received the award for Canada’s Safest New Employer. Michels Canada received the WSIB Award for Canada’s Best Health & Safety Culture, and the highly coveted WSPS Award for CEO of the Year was given to Phil Verster with Metrolinx. Verster accepted the award on behalf of all Metrolinx employees, its contractors, and the teams it works with every day. "The work is far from done," says Verster, "we will continue our part to ensure that safety never stops in everything we do."
Research The Canada’s Safest Employers Awards team conducted research and drew on knowledge and information gained through Canadian Occupational Safety to verify and support nominations received. Finalists were determined from both pools of information.
