Nominations The call for nominations was open to all occupational health and safety professionals, teams, companies and organizations – including industry service providers – from across Canada.
Excellence Awardees Once all nominations are considered and research is complete, excellence awardees were selected in each category and notified via e-mail or phone.
Judging All submissions from our excellence awardees are forwarded to the independent judging panel comprising esteemed experts, thought leaders and veterans in and around the occupational health and safety profession. The panel will assess and vote for their winners in each category according to the relevant category criteria. Voting commenced in August 2023 and their judgment is impartial, balanced, incisive and fair. Any judge with a conflict of interest in a category will recuse themselves from judging that category.
Winners Using a simple points system to aggregate judges’ votes, the excellence awardee with the top score in a category will be named the winner. Winners will be announced at the awards show on October 19, 2023 and on the website. They will also be promoted in Canadian Occupational Safety.

The star-studded show featured an entertaining celebrity host in Arissa Cox, who Canadian reality television fans know well as the host of Big Brother Canada. Cox sang, danced, and had the audience laughing all night long. The night was also highlighted by live music from the Ascension Groove Band, a fun cocktail hour, and a delicious dinner followed by more drinks and dancing. Sponsors and Winners Avetta was once again one of the main event partners, and also sponsored the award for Best Safety Industry Provider. “Avetta fundamentally changes the dynamics of the supply chain,” says Nicole Brackett, director of sales at Avetta Canada. “We enable and verify ongoing environmental, social, and financial performance, helping companies build a strong and diverse supplier base – all on a global scale. By making supply chains safer and more sustainable, we support OHS professionals throughout Canada, and that’s why we are honoured to participate in these awards.” The award for Best Safety Industry Provider went to 4S Consulting Services Inc. “Awards like this make a difference,” says Sabesh Kanagaretnam, CEO of 4S consulting. “We want to serve as many clients as we can, and our aim is to leave them with an innovative solution that can sustain their health and safety programs.” The Minerva Award for Rising Star of the Year is another honour that many industry professionals take note of. “Our sponsorship of the Minerva Award for Rising Star of the Year reinforces our promise by recognizing these future leaders who have demonstrated a passionate commitment to the integration of health and safety in the workplace,” says Tony Pasteris, president of Minerva Canada. “Minerva Canada’s health and safety educational programs and resources for post-secondary academia leverage lessons from established leaders to align and elevate the safety culture of our next generation of workers and managers.” Alyssa Grocutt, a PhD student with the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University, is the 2023 Rising Star recipient. “This one means a lot because it’s so specific to the goal that I set out to attain, which is improving safety, or at least promoting safety, and making sure that everyone goes home safely,” says Grocutt. “So this just feels really great.” The Marks Commercial Award for Most Innovative Use of Safety Technology recognizes companies that are “committed to fostering long-lasting relationships with likeminded companies that share our values,” says Marks Commercial. “We are proud to sponsor an award in recognition of those collective safety efforts, and look forward to seeing the meaningful impact we can all achieve to create a safer future for all.” SLB took home that coveted trophy. There were many other winners, including the Safety Leader of the Year, about whom you can read more. You can also find a full list of the winners here.

Excellence Awardees (shortlisted), were invited to move to the next round to complete a more detailed submission form and an employee perception survey, which they are required to send out to their employees and meet a minimum threshold of respondents by a predetermined deadline.

Threads of Life brings hope and healing to Canadian families who have been affected by a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease. It is a national charity connecting thousands of family members through one-on-one peer support, links to community support services, and the opportunity to take action to help prevent similar tragedies to other families. In 2023, Threads of Life marks its 20th anniversary. The organization was created in 2003 to fill a major gap in Canada's health and safety and social systems. There was no “helpline” to call or place to go to find the kind of emotional support and caring often required to make it through the aftermath of a workplace fatality or severe injury/illness. The long-term emotional, societal, and financial consequences of this gap are enormous and evident. These consequences include psychiatric problems, stress-related physical health problems, substance abuse, family stress, marital breakdown, suicide, loss of productivity, loss of personal income, increased social welfare costs, and more. This is a substantial and costly burden for every citizen and taxpayer, but one that can be significantly reduced. Threads of Life is a place where people can turn to help find the “cure” for workplace tragedy, which can only be accomplished through prevention. MISSION Our mission is to help families heal through a community of support and to promote the elimination of life-altering workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths. VISION Threads of Life will lead and inspire a culture shift as a result of which work-related injuries, illnesses and deaths are morally, socially and economically unacceptable.
