Hammerstone Infrastructure Materials Ltd. is a leading limestone aggregate producer located in the heart of Alberta’s mineable oil sands region. Its core asset, the Muskeg Valley Quarry near Fort McMurray and Fort McKay, ranks among the largest limestone quarries in Western Canada.
Mission & strategic focus
Hammerstone is focused on developing the industrial mineral potential of extensive mineral holdings in the Athabasca region. Its value proposition is built on delivering high-performance, economical, and environmentally sound limestone aggregates. As a 100 percent crushed and angular aggregate, Hammerstone’s product offers superior structural interlock and durability, helping customers reduce deformation and maintenance over time. Its optimized material use also results in lower raw- material demand and reduced emissions relative to conventional gravels.
Reserves & capacity
Hammerstone controls over 700 million tons of accessible limestone reserves, providing decades of supply security for regional infrastructure and industrial needs. This deep reserve base enables the company to meet the growing demand for high-quality aggregates in the energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors in northern Alberta.
Markets & customer base
Hammerstone primarily serves the oil sands and associated infrastructure markets. Its proximity to major project sites ensures efficient logistics and reliable year-round supply. The company positions itself as a dependable partner, delivering competitively priced, structurally robust materials that support long-term performance goals.
Recent ownership & strategic integration
In May 2024, BURNCO Rock Products Ltd. completed its acquisition of Hammerstone from Brookfield Business Partners, reinforcing its position in Western Canada’s aggregates sector. This acquisition expands BURNCO’s geographic footprint and adds high-value limestone production and lease-hold interests in northern Alberta to its portfolio. Hammerstone brings with it strong stakeholder relationships – including with Indigenous communities – and a track record of operational excellence, elements BURNCO intends to preserve and grow.
Operations & infrastructure
The quarry is located approximately 60 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, accessible via Highway 63 and regional roads. Hammerstone maintains offices in Fort McMurray and Calgary, as well as a scale house on site, enabling strong operational control and customer interface. The region benefits from mature infrastructure, logistics support, and industry services, which underpin Hammerstone’s consistency and reliability.
Commitment & responsibility
Hammerstone emphasizes safety, environmental stewardship, and community engagement as integral components of its operations. It acknowledges that it operates on Treaty 8 territory and commits to working respectfully with Indigenous communities in the region. The company monitors legislative developments and industry best practices, conducts audits, reports transparently, and actively promotes a culture of continuous safety and environmental improvement.
Hammerstone Infrastructure Materials Ltd. combines large-scale limestone reserves, proximity to high-demand markets, technical craftsmanship, and a reinforced strategic platform under BURNCO. With decades of long-term supply, operational stability, and stakeholder alignment, it is well positioned to support Alberta’s infrastructure, energy, and development sectors well into the future.
